Welcome back to school!

Welcome! Happy new school year from your SGE PTA (Shamrock Gardens Elementary Parent Teacher Association)! And welcome to the first edition of the Dragon News for the 2023-24 school year! This newsletter will normally be emailed bi-monthly to highlight SGE upcoming events and news. We try our best to be accurate and clear, but reach out to us anytime with questions at yourshamrockpta@gmail.com.

We're here for you. The SGE PTA represents the entire SGE school community. We encourage every parent and caregiver to join the PTA in order to connect to important school and community resources! Although volunteer time is not a membership requirement, we encourage you to consider our many volunteer opportunities to help strengthen our SGE community.

Sincerely,

Your SGE PTA Board

STAY CONNECTED! PTA WELCOME PACKET
The PTA has put together a welcome packet for the 2023-24 school year. It includes information about joining the PTA, how we will be communicating to families this school year, and information about fundraising.

More importantly, it also includes instructions to sign up for Membership Toolkit where you'll receive access to the private (optional) School Directory, the full school year PTA Events Calendar, and a signup for Rent the Rock. Simply visit our website at shamrockpta.org and click LOGIN in the upper right corner to register for free! Register by September 15th to make sure you're included in the School Directory and that we're able to connect with you!

NOTE FROM NURSE CHRISTINE
Remember that all medications, including over-the-counter, must have a CMS Medication Authorization Form filled out and signed by both your doctor and parent/guardian before any medication can be given in school. This includes creams, oral rinses, cough drops, and any pills or liquid medications. For forms and questions, visit the CMS School Health and Nursing webpage or contact Nurse Christine Ruff at christinem.ruff@cms.k12.nc.us or 980-343-6440.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES
If you still need to get school supplies for your scholar, you can find the full supply lists for all grades at this Edukit site. (Note that the deadline for ordering directly from Edukit has passed.)

LUNCH UPDATES
Shamrock no longer qualifies as a "free lunch" school. But that doesn't mean the cafeteria is any less accessible! Families should do one or both of the following:

1) To be considered for free or reduced price lunch benefits, complete a CMS meal application online at www.cmsk12.org. You can also ask for a paper application at the SGE front office.

2) Add money to your scholar's PayPAMS account. PayPAMS (Pay Parent Account Management System) is an online payment service used by CMS to manage all cafeteria purchases.

The price of lunch for scholars is $2.75. Breakfast will continue to be served to all students every day at no charge. You may contact the CMS School Nutrition office at 980-343-6041 with any additional questions about school lunch.

LOGISTICS
Step 1, Day 1: Get your scholar to school!

Bus riders: Information regarding scholars' bus numbers and estimated pick-up and drop-off times was given out at Lucky's Birthday. For those not able to attend, the information was mailed with class assignments. Families are also highly encouraged to get the Here Comes the Bus app, which provides GPS tracking of their scholar's bus when in service. You'll need the CMS district code (73877) and your scholar's ID number. For more information about bus transportation, visit the CMS transportation services webpage, and also feel free to ask questions during Open House.

Car riders, walkers, and bikers: For information about carpool, including drop-off and pick-up times and a car line map, see these Car Line Procedures. The bottom of the webpage also includes a walker and biker map for those who get to school on their own fuel!

Feeling lucky? Sign up to volunteer

We love our volunteers and appreciate any amount of time you are able to give. Volunteering at the school is a great way to give back and have fun at the same time! Opportunities include chaperoning field trips, helping with events and staff appreciation, guest reading, and eating lunch with your scholar. If you plan to volunteer in any way, make sure you register at cmsvolunteers.com. This must be done every year!

Back to School Open House Dates

See the calendar below for SGE Open House dates for each grade. Scholars and their families can meet with their teachers for the upcoming year and get additional back-to-school information. Note that kindergarten parents/guardians will have their own Kindergarten Open House the first week of school.

Treat Yourself and SGE!

On Sunday, August 20th, Cold Hearted Gelato (1308 The Plaza) is celebrating their one-year anniversary and has chosen SGE to receive a portion of their sales for the entire day!

And then, our first Spirit Night of the school year will be at Jeni's Ice Creams in NoDa (416 East 36th St.). Go after Open House on Thursday, August 24th, between 4:00-7:00pm, and mention SGE.

A percentage of your gelato/ice cream purchases at both events will benefit Shamrock. Win-win. (PS - Yes, this means we approve of dessert two days in one week. OK, let's be real; we approve of dessert every day of the week.)

Coffee with Principal Potter

Join Principal Potter for coffee at the school on the first Friday of each month at 8:15am. She'll inform families about happenings at the state, district, and school level. Questions are always welcome. The first Coffee with Principal Potter will be on Friday, Sept. 1st.

Mark your calendars!

Passive ways to support SGE everyday!

Support SGE while you shop with these easy, passive fundraising opportunities.

Harris Teeter VIC

This must be done each year! Link your VIC card to SGE (code 3961), and a portion of your Harris Teeter purchases will be donated back to SGE! Log in to HT's Together in Education, and cross this off your list.

Box Tops

Download the Box Tops app and link to SGE. When you scan your receipts from any store, the app will find participating products and give back part of those purchases to SGE!

We've got spirit! How about you?

Visit our spirit store anytime! Grab magnets, yard signs, and spirit wear, including spirit shirts that can be worn as part of the school uniform.

Rent the Rock

You can also Rent the Rock any week of the year for just $20, which raises money for SGE and shows off our community's creativity and spirit.

App Wrap-Up

New parents, we're looking at you. Here's a wrap of the apps we've found most useful when navigating the everyday stuff of an SGE scholar:

  • ParentSquare - Main method for SGE staff and teachers to message SGE families. (The app shows up as "CMS" on a mobile device.)
  • Here Comes the Bus - This app, when it works, tracks your scholar's bus to/from school. A modern wonder for parents who grew up in the 80s/90s.
  • Nutrislice - The easy part? Viewing all upcoming school menus in one place. The hard part? Convincing your kid to eat the rotini.
  • PayPAMS - Use to load money onto your scholar's cafeteria account. You can also use it to track what your scholar ate for lunch (or at least what they put on their tray), including all those Doritos...
  • PowerSchool - Beginning in third grade, grades and attendance are tracked here for scholars.
